With so many of today’s full-size SUVs utilizing the classic V-8 engines of yesteryear, the 2024 Ford Expedition and 2024 Toyota Sequoia are a sort of kindred spirits. Though both share rugged underpinnings with their pickup truck cousins, the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra, their power plants are forward-thinking and fuel efficient V-6s, and one of them is even a hybrid.
Key Takeaways
- The 2024 Expedition and 2024 Tundra both are powerful three-row SUVs with considerable towing capacity, but Expedition buyers will find more space inside for passengers and their gear.
- The 2024 Expedition gets top marks in the infotainment department with Ford’s latest Sync 4 software running on a standard 12-inch touchscreen, plus an optional Bang & Olufsen audio system with an insane 22 speakers.
- The 2024 Sequoia stands apart from the crowd with its 437 horsepower iForce MAX hybrid powertrain.
- The Expedition had a major refresh in 2022, while the totally redesigned Sequoia hit the market for 2023. So both of these supersized SUVs feel fresh inside and out, with style to spare.
Powertrain and acceleration
The 2024 Expedition has three different engines to select from, all derived from a 3.5-liter V-6 with twin-turbochargers. The basic version of this engine makes a generous 380 horsepower, which jumps to 400 horsepower when the Limited trim level is selected. For the true speed demons, the optional Stealth Performance package delivers 440 horsepower from the V-6.
In contrast, all 2024 Sequoias come equipped with the same hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 gasoline engine. Combined, they produce a total of 437 horsepower.
As part of a recent review, Car and Driver drove an Expedition with four-wheel drive and the top engine from 0-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds — a time that would have been impressive for a supercar one or two decades ago. For reference, that same publication performed an identical 0-60 mph test with a four-wheel-drive Sequoia Capstone, which took 5.6 seconds.
The Expedition is king of the large infotainment screen
The base Sequoia, called SR5, comes with an 8-inch infotainment screen, which is merely adequate by modern standards. Optional on the SR5 and standard on higher trims is a much larger 14-inch touchscreen. Regardless of screen size, all Sequoias come with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
This is one category where the 2024 Expedition trounces the Sequoia. That’s because it comes standard with a 12-inch touchscreen running Ford's latest Sync4 software that supports over-the-air updates as new technology and features become available in the future. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also supported.
If the 12-inch touchscreen still isn’t large enough, a truly spectacular 15.5-inch unit is on offer and so is a Bang & Olufsen stereo with a whopping 22 speakers scattered throughout the cabin.
Is the 2024 Sequoia roomier than the Expedition?
As far as passenger space, the Sequoia has 41.2 inches of legroom for front seat occupants, 39.2 inches for second row passengers, and 33.7 inches for third row passengers, assuming that the third row is slid all the way toward the rear of the vehicle.
That last bit about the sliding third row has been a point of contention among some automotive journalists because with the third row slid fully rearward, there’s only about 11.5 cubic feet of storage space available, which is comically small for such a large SUV.
Toyota says that sliding the third row all the way forward will yield 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space, but that’ll likely make these seats uninhabitable for anyone larger than a small child. Additionally, the third row doesn’t fold fully flat because of the hybrid battery underneath, which makes an obstruction in the cargo floor.
Unfortunately — or fortunately for us Ford dealerships — the Sequoia’s interior dimensions do not best those of the Expedition. Ford’s biggest SUV boasts 43.9 inches of legroom for front seat occupants, 41.5 inches in the second row, and 36.1 in the third row. That’s bigger all around than the Sequoia and the cargo area is also larger, with 19.3 cubic feet behind the third row when set in its most comfortable position.
For families who truly need the utmost amount of people and cargo capacity, there’s also a MAX version of the Expedition available with certain trim levels, which, as the name implies, is nearly a full 12 inches longer overall than the standard Expedition.
While both the Expedition and Sequoia are competent, there’s a reason why Kelly Blue Book selected the 2024 Expedition as a Best Buy in the full-size category for 2024. Its combination of towing capacity, infotainment, and overall roominess just can’t be beat. Interested in deciding for yourself if the Expedition is the best full-size SUV as touted?
